Candy Box 2: Strange But Sweet

Candy Box 2 is an ASCII-styled adventure/puzzle game, and a sequel to one of the prominent early incremental titles. But while Candy Box 2 is still functionally an incremental/idle game, with a candy counter that continues to accrue while you are not playing, most of the progression happens as you look for secrets and solve the puzzles of how to overcome the game’s challenges with the limited decision-making the game presents you with.

Not a meaty experience, and certainly filled with obtuse secrets, Candy Box 2 nevertheless has a joyful vibe for those looking for a light distraction. It’s free-to-play. The ASCII art is funny and charming. There is a sense of progression, as you collect better equipment with which to go out and quest.

The quests themselves consist of the player character (depicted as the character sequence “\o/”) automatically scrolling along the dungeons and getting in fights. The challenge is in solving these encounters, many of which will be impossible to complete through brute force alone. It is genuinely fun to discover the exploits which allow you to defeat these otherwise insurmountable challenges.

While not some undiscovered classic waiting to reeducate you on what a game can be, Candy Box 2 is an alright way to waste a few minutes while on hold for an important phone call. And sometimes that’s all a game needs to be.
