Let’s get this out of the way: the footage is great. If you want some impeccably-filmed bear footage, this is your jam.
I’d just suggest you do so with the audio muted. John C. Reilly’s narration is adequate. The problem is the script. It’s the sort of drivel that imposes human perspectives, relationships, and motives onto everything on screen, and even overreaches in search of a story arc, which it struggles to find. This may make the documentary more engaging for children, but it also adds negative educational value, misinforming viewers by teaching them to read all of nature through a storybook perspective.
Animals can be complex, intelligent, and worthy of respect, all without being human. If only our media reflected that!
Content warning: animal violence, fish evisceration, general ursine behavior
Educational Value: 3
Aesthetics: 10
Engagement: 5
Spectacle: 7
Overall score: the real treasure--all the friends the bears made along the way.
