Sarah Gailey constructs a fun, engaging magical mystery in Magic for Liars. It’s a classic whodunit, set in a magical high school, with a competent twist and worthy plotting. Breadcrumbs are frequent, meaningful, and consistent. It’s easy to believe that some readers will solve what happened halfway through the text. But even if you do, the emotional stakes at the heart of the story should keep events entertaining until the main character catches up to you.
The character relationships are the star of the story; particularly the main character’s relationship with her sister and with a love interest at the school. The relationships are entertaining and messy and intriguing, which is exactly what the story called for.
