Contemporary cosmic horror that centers a diverse cast. Excellent plotting, but it’s a part-one-of-x so it fails to tell a complete story. The ensemble main cast is very entertaining, but the person who most feels like a primary protagonist spends most of the book on the sidelines. This never stopped feeling weird to me, but also doesn’t detract from the story being told or the magnetism of the other perspective characters.
If you love cosmic horror, you do yourself a disservice by not reading this. If you’ve never read cosmic horror, you’re better off starting here than with anything else I’ve read. If you dislike cosmic horror, you might consider reading this one anyway; it transcends the genre, like my mind as I stare into the great pulsing eye that observes me from within the night sky.
