Bland, predictable, and lacking teeth. Are you in it for the scares, the mystery, or the characters? They all disappoint. The scares come so seldomly and so lack in believable stakes that it’s hard to be anything but unmoved by the story’s hauntings. Mysteries abound, but are signaled loudly and frequently, and are accompanied by a good deal of information oversharing. Every single one is resolved in the first way you’d guess, so the show lacks surprises. And the characters are living out what appears to be a down-to-earth soap opera despite everything going on around them.
A lot of scenes go too long, with characters repeating themselves in five different ways and more or less giving away the entire rest of their story arcs. Some of these scenes (and some of these episodes) really needed to be cut by 20-25% for better pacing.
The actors do a fine job, much of the cast shared with Haunting of Hill House, and the show is handsomely shot. And nothing is so bad that you could call it incompetent. But it lands in that special zone of mediocrity where things go to be forgotten, like the memory of a faceless ghost.
