Babe (1995), Relentlessly Cute

From the perspective of its titular character, Babe is a story about a pig who is “adopted” by a family of sheepdogs. From the perspective of the human characters, Babe is a story about a pig who is bought by a farmer for Christmas dinner. Don’t worry, Babe doesn’t get eaten in this feel-good family film. Babe is about how doing things the kind way, no matter how unusual, can be more effective than doing things the tried-and-true way, even making those around you more kind as well.

The animals talk, but only understand one another. This is the sort of light anthropomorphization that children’s movies always indulge in. But in this film, it’s kind of the single most important plot mechanic. It’s how Babe talks to others that opens opportunities that lead him to becoming a sheep-pig.

The movie is cute. It’s funny. It’s got competent storytelling (I wasn’t expecting it to). At times it feels like a vegan propaganda film. If it sounds like your cup of tea, give it a watch. If you liked it as a kid, go ‘head and watch it again. It holds up.
