[Brandy’s] Cinderella (1997)

I don’t like musicals. I don’t like this particular fairy tale. I don’t like Disney films, on the whole. I’m not even sure I like this film.

But it’s the best version of Cinderella.

It’s got Whoopy. It’s got Whitney. It’s got Jason Alexander. Do these three things go together? I don’t know. I don't care. This movie is so focused on having fun and being silly that I don’t even mind the love-at-first-sight garbage it peddles. If nothing else, it even does that better than other versions.

This Cinderella has the best Cinderella. This Cinderella has the best prince. This Cinderella has the absolute funniest step-sisters.

This Cinderella, occasionally, has really good dialogue. I don’t know why they even bothered. That’s not why most people came to watch it. But it’s there.

What else is there? Color, verve, energy, joy, heart.

It’s good. It’s the best Cinderella. And I kinda hate it. But I hate it way less than the other versions I've been subject to. I won’t be watching it again, but if musicals are your bag, I certainly recommend it.
