Cabin in the Woods: A Metacommentary

I don’t think there’s much for me to say about Cabin in the Woods that someone smarter hasn’t already said. It manages to be a metacommentary on the horror film genre, slasher films in particular and torture porn in general. While it explores the relationship between the characters in the genre, their tropes, the audience, and the filmmakers, with keen wit, I’d like to just focus on a different aspect of the film.

It slaps. Even if it weren’t smart, and had nothing to say about its genre, this movie would be a damn good time anyway. It’s hilarious. It’s tense. There are stakes. And most importantly, the movie follows through with its premise.

Best of all, the third act turns the pulp knob to eleven and gives an all-time great bloodbath and mayhem finale that more than justifies the time spent watching the rest of the film. This is a great horror-comedy, a must-see for fans of the slasher genre.
