Child’s Play

Prepare to throw all logic out the window on this one. The plot mechanics are ill-defined. You knew that just based on the premise. But the characters also consistently do the dumbest possible thing at every step, and this is true for basically every character. Be prepared to follow a child around as he is manipulated by Chucky, the serial killer turned malevolent talking doll who is never convincingly anything but intensely creepy.

That’s not to say that it’s hard to believe that the kid would be tricked. It’s somewhat explicable by his mental state. And that’s what the whole film comes down to. All the characters and their general motivations are understandable in the broad strokes, even if an applied attention to detail will immediately destroy the slipshod illusion. In other words, if you turn your brain off it will all make just enough sense for you to buy in.

The creepy stuff is well done, the threat level feels real, and the protagonists are easy to care about. The horror scenes are well-staged and tense. If you can maintain suspension of disbelief, I’d even say the film is a good time. Not highly recommended, but pretty decent where it matters.
