Lovebirds: A Romantic Murder Comedy

A couple who are drifting apart accidentally become accessories to a murder. Two people of color, they spend the rest of the film running away from the police and trying to find the murderer so that they can clear their names. And in the process, they begin to remember the reasons why they like one another.

This film is stupidly funny and the relationship between the main characters is textured. It’s both easy to understand why they resent one another and what caused them to gravitate towards one another. Which is good, because the movie wouldn’t work if their relationship didn’t. Of course, this is a comedy first and the reason the relationship matters is because their dynamic drives a lot of the jokes. No matter how ridiculous the situation becomes (and it becomes increasingly so throughout the film), their approach to solving the current problem is always consistent with their characters and interplay. The two make a lot of bad decisions, often escalating the situation, which in turn causes them to make other extreme decisions.

But is it funny? Yeah, it’s funny. At points, rewind-to-hear-a-joke-again levels of funny. If you’re on the fence, watch it. You’ll know if it’s for you within the first ten-to-fifteen minutes.
