People like to see Nicolas Cage wilding out. So Cage indulges, every couple years, with a film where he does just that. Mandy is one of those. I have two warnings about this film.
First, this film grates on the senses. Harsh lighting and ambient sound design gnaws on your brain and I think that’s intentional.
Secondly, outside the audiovisual experience, there isn’t much to talk about. The story is a revenge-gore thrasher where the protagonist becomes a monster. It’s not the first of its kind and, narratively speaking, Mandy is hollow.
Why you should watch this movie: two dudes swordfight with chainsaws. I rest my case.
Content warning: graphic violence, torture, body horror, abduction, attempted mind control and sexual abuse, extreme lighting effects, jarring auditory noise
